2008 Acura MDX

2008 Acura MDX

Moving on Up

Acura's upscale MDX has a powerful engine, plenty of style, and many technologically advanced features

A redesigned version of Acura’s upscale MDX midsize SUV debuted for 2007 with more of everything: distinctive styling inside and out, a longer wheelbase, a new powertrain, higher towing capacity, and a heaping helping of technology.

Among the noteworthy features are an optional navigation system with real-time traffic updates and a climate-control system that works with the navigation to adjust interior temperatures relative to the position of the sun. Safety equipment includes standard front-seat whiplash-reducing head restraints and a rollover protection system that automatically deploys head-curtain airbags if the vehicle flips.

The Acura MDX’s sculpted exterior is bold and rich looking, with a large pentagonal front grille and chiseled lines, including one that wraps uninterrupted all the way around the vehicle — something you don’t see often. It bears more than a passing resemblance to its smaller sibling, the RDX. The MDX also shares technology with the Honda Pilot.

The interior has room for seven. Like the exterior, it’s more stylish than before, with a new cockpit-like dashboard design with straightforward controls that eschew the complex, screen-based interface that many luxury automakers have adopted recently. The middle row is now a two-seat configuration, while a three-seat third row is on hand for the kiddies. It folds completely into the floor to maximize cargo volume without having to physically remove the seat from the vehicle.Under the Acura MDX’s creased hood is a high-tech 3.7-liter V6 that, with 300 hp, delivers V8-like acceleration with decent fuel economy for a midsize SUV with this much power. It’s rated at an EPA-estimated 17 mpg in the city and 22 mpg on the highway

A five-speed automatic transmission can be operated manually, if so desired. The MDX has a 5,000-pound maximum tow rating, which is 1,500 pounds more than the old version. It is on par with many truck-based models, which are typically viewed as sturdier and more utilitarian than so-called crossover SUVs like the Acura MDX. (They are called crossovers because they look like trucks but are built like cars.)

While the Acura MDX isn't built to traverse rugged terrain, it includes a version of the Super-Handling All-Wheel-Drive system found in the RDX compact SUV and the RL full-size luxury sedan. It distributes torque among all of the wheels for optimum grip.

Stability and traction control maintain poise on treacherous roads and during emergency maneuvers. The suspension has been revised to deliver well-balanced ride and handling characteristics for a luxury-car feel. Those who prefer sportier handling can choose the optional Sport Package. It includes a new Active Damper System that automatically adjusts the stiffness of the suspension.

Standard amenities are plentiful and include tri-zone automatic climate control with air filtration system and humidity regulation, a hands-free Bluetooth interface, as well as a premium audio system with a CD changer, XM satellite radio capability, and an auxiliary jack for iPods and other portable devices.

The Acura MDX includes standard front, front-side, and side-curtain airbags with a rollover sensor that automatically inflates the curtain airbags as a precautionary measure if the vehicle is about to roll over.

In keeping with Acura’s streamlined options menu, stand-alone factory options are not offered. Additional features can only be added through a choice of three equipment packages: The $3,500 Technology Package comes with a 410-watt surround-sound audio system, a voice-activated navigation system with real-time traffic information, and a rear back-up camera for easier and safer parking.

The $5,600 Sport Package includes all of the above plus unique interior trim, upgraded upholstery and the Active Damper System. Meanwhile, the $2,200 Entertainment Package adds a rear-seat DVD player, 110-volt power outlet, and a power-operated tailgate, but it’s only available in conjunction with either of the other two packages.

Is the Acura MDX for You?

Buy this Vehicle if You need space for four adults and two or three kids; most of your driving is on-road; you need to haul or tow bulky loads; you prefer handling and performance dynamics that resemble that of a luxury car more than that of a truck.
Keep Looking if You frequently drive on rough terrain; a midsize sedan or wagon or a smaller SUV would suit your needs; you need the power of a V8 and strength of a full-size SUV for heavy-duty towing or hauling.
Who Fits? Four adults ride in comfort with two or three kids able to sit in the third row; a lower-than-average ride height eases ingress and egress for shorter passengers.
Options Worth Splurging on If you're inclined to such things, the Technology Package ($3,500) includes a clever voice-activated navigation system and a back-up camera.
